Once in a while, I love to indulge in board and card games, be it at work with my colleagues or at home with the kids, and as with any game, the competition can sometimes get intense. This is especially true between me (the mother who does not let up) and the younger one who feels it’s her right to win. I mean, come on, we all know life is tough, so why should I go easy on someone just because they are young (who’s with me!).
In most of these games, one thing always stands out: the person who defines the rules somehow always wins the game. Think of a game like cards, whether poker or Uno, there seem to be different rules every time, depending on the players. Before we start the game, we have to develop an understanding of the rules that will define the play.
And you know what? Every time we start a game, there’s always a dispute over whose rules we will play by. Why is this the case? Other than the fact that as humans, we love being in our comfort zone, being in a position where you can spot your opponents’ mistakes and counter them even before they complete their move gives you a false sense of security and assurance.
Life demands that you play a game that you know you can win. And you will only have this assurance of a win if you know the game inside and out. You must have spent some time learning its intricacies to be better than the other players. And so it is with Personal Branding.
To succeed in Personal Branding, you must learn how to leverage your strengths because it’s your strengths that will define who you are and keep you in the professional game for longer.
So, how do you ensure you win in the Personal Branding game?
Understand the rules of the game:
Personal Branding, like any game, has its own set of rules and dynamics that you must grasp to succeed. Before diving into the online world and the many social media platforms, understand the intricacies behind who and what your Personal Brand is. This means knowing your unique strengths, values, and what sets you apart from others in your field. It also involves understanding your target audience and what they are looking for. Remember, the rules of personal branding can vary depending on your industry, so it’s important to do thorough research and adapt your strategy accordingly.
Play the game:
You can’t win if you’re merely a passive observer. Understanding the rules is crucial, but it’s equally important to actively participate and engage in the process of personal branding. To enjoy the benefits of personal branding, you must implement and put into practice what you’ve learned. This means consistently creating and curating content that reflects your personal brand identity and understanding that engagement is critical. Remember that personal branding is an ongoing journey. It’s not a one-time effort, but a continuous process of building, refining, and maintaining your image and reputation.
Follow the rules:
Following the rules of personal branding means adhering to ethical guidelines, being authentic, and maintaining consistency in your brand image. It involves staying true to your values and ensuring that your actions and communications align with your personal brand. Deviating from the established rules, can damage your reputation and hinder your success in the long run. Ultimately, you want to have a brand that people can trust and rely on.
Listen to your coach:
Successful athletes have coaches to guide them to victory, and similarly, having someone to provide guidance and feedback can be invaluable to your journey. In personal branding, your “coach” can be a mentor, a consultant, or even your own critical self-evaluation. Their role is to offer insights, perspectives, and expertise that will help you identify areas for improvement and provide constructive feedback to help you enhance your personal brand. Listening to your coach also means being open to learning and growth.
Your personal brand has the potential to be the most powerful tool that will set you apart, and ultimately help you navigate the competitive landscape of your chosen field with confidence and excellence.
Understand the game you are playing in and #standout4growth.
